One of my dearest habits is keeping a diary. By chance I happened to start and end one exactly when in-person classes stopped and started again. It was a diary I did not like. Until I read through it again and found it interesting. I collected (and translated) some bits, in the hope that they might, for someone, create a short-lived breach into the forced isolation that we share.

Marzo 2020

March 2020

I had a rule. Listen to the deep current of your spirit and fate will favor you.
Then came Covid-19.

I faced reality, accepting to abandon for a while that new, newly found me. I accept to go back, as one accepts to wake up from a dream.

How am I doing? It's quite surprising. Because I'm not sad: I'm fine. It's not like before, that feeling of lightness is forever gone. But I accept its departure, just as I welcomed its arrival. Might it be that I never really believed in it?
Come what may, and I will stand my ground. This is how I feel.
Come sto io?
Come what may, and I will stand my ground. Mi sento così.

Resuming the term with online classes is as familiar as tracing someone else's footprints in the snow, but doing so with feet too small to leave a mark of their own. Slowly I can feel them surface again, those wrinkles.

In the end I'm doing fine over here. I sleep my daily six hours like a stone clad in softness. About the future I question little, and dream a lot.

With Covid, times have changed and so has my way of feeling. My effervescent curiosity has become heavy: all I whish for is to be alone, in a shell of warm nostalgia.

Summer awakens something that pushes me away from home, in the night, smell of warm asphalt and flowers.

No steps will be taken in our direction by the school. We all felt a little betrayed. It feels that we have an unpleasant term ahead.

I waste the entire day banging my head against a design that doesn't work. I leave, all hope abandoned, to take a walk in a park full of people and barbecues. I cut through the mass of flesh and gazes, like a ghost, and I get the hint of a feeling that is sadly familiar. If only the school could reopen...

I have lost all good habits. The melancholic thoughts and worries of a week ago have dealt the final blow to an already sinking productivity. The well-known "I don't give a damn" refrain pays its respects again. When this stage is reached, time speeds up dangerously: few things are less memorable than procrastination. The prospect of another term like this makes me loose all motivation. I won't take it. So I encourage change: tomorrow I'm visiting a new house, which might turn out to be the right one, finally. And even if it isn't, it wouldn't matter!
Ho perso ogni buona abitudine.

July 1st is the day I'll move - and I wish it was already here. I'm also a bit stressed, to tell the truth, but suddenly I feel the wind of change howling in me. It won't be another term like this.

July: often this was for me a time of goodbyes. Of a bittersweet, splendid sadness, flowing on drowsy skin like the rustling in the leaves.

Luglio

July

I eat canned food as if this was a temporary bivouac, and in the same way I feel on edge, I remain alert. Any change, however wished for, is scary.
Did I make the wrong choice? I shake my head to dismiss the thought, like a bug. Because, look at where I am, after all: writing my diary in the kitchen - it's been so long. With the familiar hum of a fridge, the agitation of the outside world subsiding into dusk. Someone passes by, there is a peaceful silence: it is a new beginning. It is a new beginning.

I don't understand, something's off. I don't like myself in these new people's eyes. I feel like a clumsy frog, I look for an encounter and run away right afterwards, not feeling up to it. I feel a push, but towards what? I'm scared about exposing myself in this state, even if most likely no one would notice anything. Truth is that I'm extremely under pressure, with the summer term menacingly approaching.

Nobody stops by for a chat after class anymore. And I stopped asking for it.
If you look for what you need, illusions are what you will find.
If you look for what you need, illusions are what you will find.

From the rest of the world I feel towards me… annoyance and rejection. Not simply because lately I'm the first one to find my words unpleasant. Showing vulnerability seems to have become unwelcomed. Everyone keeps their distance, in a way that both irritates and discourages me. All the more since I clearly feel that this vulnerability of mine isn't the only one. Out of place in words, invisible in silence: this could really be the motto of these months.
Maybe I just need to find the right way to talk about my insecurities. However, this situation is shit in itself. It's okay to say it: it's just shit. It might be about time to consider a plan B.

I noticed, who knows why, that I feel as if part of a universe where adults have suddenly disappeared. Those reassuring spirits, whom I enjoyed talking to during a summer camp's dinner. That dimension that acts firmly beyond my understanding. Those parents I was tied to by an unquestionable bond. I miss the calm fierceness that all this gifted me with. Yes, I miss my parents.
Sì, mi mancano i miei genitori.

The sovereign emptiness that resonates in me is interrupted only by the longing for food, the class' start, the pathetic drive to refresh the phone for novelty and, more and more often, memories.

Nothing works. Simply, nothing works. I know all too well how to force myself to work: "just work". Because you decided to. Well, I'm getting to understand that, in order to succeed in that, it's necessary to possess a strength that just isn't always there. In the end I'm really considering it: jumping on a plane and fuck everything. It would be 508 euros and a blow to my pride. But- "going home"... this is a problematic sentence in itself.
Nulla funziona. Semplicemente, nulla funziona.

Maybe this can be the chance to prove something to myself. Even if it's just keeping barely afloat, at least I would then have made it, on my own. Yes, I will stay. Leaving is like getting married: in the good and bad luck.

Falling in love with your work again after endless weeks of unproductivity is like being touched by divine light. Meeting illegally at school to work… who cares about rules anymore?

I lost and found my wallet in an abandoned industrial complex. Again 6 regular hours of sleep are enough, and I enjoy eating a moderate amount. I gain in clarity of mind.
I decided to stay in Montreal with the determination to face enormous adversity. But since I took that decision, things have started to improve on their own. What will be left for me will be the value of having made the right choice.
I begin to understand that any choice is inherently uncertain. Data will never be enough to find "the best option". The game is actually played on a completely different level, because through decisions identity is built. So the real question should always be: what is the choice I want to remember I made?
Guadagno in lucidità.

First true evening between roommates (& co). Wine apparently helps the understanding of French. Of Quebecois, actually. Tabarnac! Co-living's most precious part is the teaching of tolerance. Different continents, different worlds, but the only thing that truly matters, in the end, always, is kindness.

I've been working a lot lately. And it's been quite a satisfaction being finally able to prove to everyone that my vision for the portfolio project was not a fool's delusion. I know that a good portion of what I do is of fair quality. And at the same time, excellence doesn't interest me.
In questi giorni lavoro molto.

Having found again some sort of stability, I suddenly forgot about the existence of all those people whose attention I was so eagerly demanding, until not so long ago. Such a sweet hypocritical egotism, isn't it? However, more and more often I have to come to terms with the vile essence of human nature. It's mud that we are made of.

The more the reopening of the school approaches, the more it seems menacing: a week and a few days are what's left before that moment. I notice in me some sort of bad feeling, almost hostility. Part of me would like to continue working from home - to hell with everything. As if I was already looking beyond the end of the school, as if I whished for it be over.

One year after my arrival in Montreal. Surely a year I won't forget, an year as unpredictable as I want my life to be. The magic is over: when I look in the mirror, I find those same wrinkles I had before the school started. I have to say, though, I wear them better.
All remains unset, in suspension, with eloquent silence.
